Fourth of July -- Patrick Henry

One of the problems of history is how names, places, events tend to shrink in our memories to “bullet points” or “sound bites”. For example, you hear George Washington and you think “Father of our Country”, or visualize the man standing in the prow of a small boat crossing the Delaware river, or might even think just “wooden teeth”.

For most people, when they hear Patrick Henry, if they even recall him, they think “give me liberty or give me death”. With our nation’s Independence Day coming up, it would be fitting to look back on the entire speech wherein Henry’s famous phrase was culled; especially recalling that today other countrymen of our are fighting and dying in distant lands to try and bring freedom to the people there.

It’s not too long and definitely worth a few minutes of your time. Check it out here.

God bless America,
Richard Ryan

Very inspiring, reading the original context of his famous line. I always got the impression from history books that he was a bit of an emotional hothead, but his reasoning (in this speech at least) is compelling.
